General Philosophy, A Personal Statement

Over the thirty-five years that I have been a psychotherapist, my training has been both extensive and, by choice, eclectic. I have moved from my initial psychoanalytic training to family systems and behavioral and cognitive behavioral approaches. Behavioral activated therapy is part of my cognitive approach. I also use three alternative methods (see Alternative Therapeutic Methods). My style is highly interactive with weekly tasks given where appropriate. It is important to me that patients know that I have great respect for, and experience with, diversified ethnic, racial, gender, cultural groups, and differing family styles.
Individual Counseling – Counseling in New York, NY
Whether I am working with an individual, a couple, or a family, I believe that the past influences and validates the present and that history and belief systems can interfere with comfort level and emotional well-being. Changing negative belief systems is an important part of the style I have and the kind of therapy I do. Working with couples is a major area of expertise, as are parenting issues and working with depression and anxiety in individuals.

Women's Issues

There are more similarities than differences between men and women, but there are some particular differences. With over thirty-five years of experience, I am uniquely qualified to deal with hormonal, pre-menopausal, menopausal and sexual issues. I also have a great deal of experience in parenting, step-parenting, self-image, new relationships, career choice, career change issues, balancing career and family, adult-child and parent and grand parenting issues.

Men's Issues

While there is much over-lap between men's and women's issues, men often come to treatment because of career issues and decisions, because they are adults with ADD or ADHD, because they need anger management, or to learn better family and communication skills. They also come to treatment when their life-partners have insisted. They do well with psychotherapy, coaching, or a combination of both.

Sexual Concerns and Problems

Sexual concerns and problems encompass a wide variety of issues and include both men and women, LGBTQ / gay and straight. Whether it be lessening of sexual desire for men or women, erectile dysfunction for men, or a medical, hormonal, or pharmaceutical problem for men or women, your concerns will be treated with respect and dignity. As with other problems, the first task is to determine whether the problem is relationship based, anxiety based, or a hormonal or medical problem. If hormonally or medically based, I would work closely with the appropriate medical specialist, i.e. gynecologist, urologist, endocrinologist, oncologist, etc. Your emotional comfort is of utmost importance, as is confidentiality and working together to find a solution to improve your sexual life.

Chronic Illness

Chronic illness affects not only the person that is identified as ill, but also the entire family, with particular stress on the caregiver(s). I am uniquely qualified to deal with the stress and decision making of caregivers, as well as the emotional needs of the ill person. This includes decision making, compliance with medical, dietary, and exercise needs and living with a problem that never goes away. If the need arises, preparing for and dealing with death are also areas in which I have experience.
