Bernice B. Bernhard, Ph.D - Alternative Therapeutic Methods in New York

 
I have been trained in three alternative therapeutic methods, which are used when appropriate, along with traditional psychotherapy. The decision to use any Gentle Energy Based Alternative Therapy is made jointly by the patient and me.

TAT - The Tappas Acupressure Technique (An Energy Therapy)

TAT is an integrated mind-body energy therapy used to help alleviate any phobias, anxiety, traumas, or post-traumatic stress disorders that may interfere with optimal functioning. All that needs to be done is to put your fingertips on designated acupressure points (always the same points) as you think of the problem. Although definitely not hypnosis, during this process I will repeat certain phrases as you concentrate on the problem and thoughts and feelings will be evoked. This same process is used over and over until the trauma is resolved. Your memory will remain, but it is no longer traumatic because remembering is not the same as re-experiencing. I use TAT along with EMDR, TFT, and traditional methods to be sure that the best diagnosis and treatment plan is made for each individual. Again, the decision as to whether to use all or any alternative method is a respectful and joint decision made by the patient and me.
 

EMDR - Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing

Negative emotions and memories are worked through as you work together with Dr. Bernhard to eliminate trauma and stimulate your own self-healing process. EMDR is used especially for cases involving post-traumatic events and emotional situations that we keep reliving over and over again. The actual method appears very simple; using either a specially designed machine or the therapist's two fingers the patient then follows a back-and-forth movement (similar to watching a tennis match) and thinks of the problem. A series of questions are asked and the process continues. Please note that this is only a simplified explanation, but that what is an established fact is that there are thousands of documented success stories. The traumatic memory that caused the re-experiencing does not go away, but is now a bad memory and not part of a frequent and never ending way of dealing with a negative event. I use EMDR with traditional psychotherapy and with TFT or TAT as determined to be most therapeutic.
 

TFT - Thought Field Therapy (An Energy Therapy)

TFT is used for phobias, traumatic experiences, post-traumatic stress disorder, shame, jealousy, anxiety, etc. Directed by the therapist, acupressure points on the body are used by the patient after a diagnosis that determines which series of acupressure would best help. You think of the problem, touch the determined acupressure points, and breathe deeply. There are also other simple instructions given by me. The areas that were causing the stress are changed positively due to subtle change and a rebalancing of the body's energy system.
 
I will use either or both EMDR or TFT as the particular problem is analyzed. As noted prior, traditional methods are used concurrently.
